Steam: News

Refresh on the fly

  • It’s the big beta roll up.
  • Yeah!
  • If you were hoping they’d hurry up and bring the 40-60Hz refresh rate change to the stable channel, here you go!
  • This also comes with the beta improvements to the fan and white-noise removal.
  • Basically, update now. Really!

Steam Deck & Index parts now available.

  • Stuff is reasonably priced.
  • Wouldn’t mind some schematics.
  • How Valve is Changing Game Console Design
    • Quite self aggrandizing considering you’re the primary supplier of replacement bits.
  • But don’t let my sour grapes spoil your sport.
  • Having now taken my Steam Deck apart to put the 256GB SSD in, it’s refreshing to see just how simple and straightforward it is to do maintenance or upgrades when compared to even x86 laptops.
  • Let alone physical DRM boxes like those branded XBox, PlayStation, or Switch.
  • I will continue to applaud VALVe and now iFixit for making possibly the best, most mod friendly, console of the 2020s thus far.
  • Aaaaand the batteries fans and left joysticks are all sold out
    • Probably people stocking up
  • But hey, if you got the 64 gig model and want a fancy anti-glare screen you can get one of those
    • Sold out in the UK store.

New Experimental

  • I got bitten by the new Outward Definitive Edition, so now I can see the intro videos instead of them just being skipped like when I played it before.
  • Nice to see vermintide make the supported list.
  • Vermintide 2 on the other hand..

That happened 2

  • The masses cried out to Gaben; “Save our game!”. And Gaben answered “I heard you” and sat on his butt
  • I wouldn’t be surprised if Valve actually did something. They tend to only react once public outcry is too loud to ignore.
  • Unfortunately, if it comes down to money, I don’t really think there’s much more growth to be had for TF2.
  • At this point anything that comes down the pipe is charity
    • The pessimist in me says that the server browser goes goodbye and it’s dedicated only.
  • Remember when Valve sold hats, it was a simpler time.
  • TF2 showing up on Linux was peak FPS anything burnout in my world.
  • Played it twice, I think.

Steam: New Games

Fly Dangerous

  • Looks like that standalone elite dangerous racing game became a real boy
  • No VR on the linux side
  • The Trackmania medal attribution at the end didn’t go unnoticed.
  • Xbox controlla don’t work, not even a little bit.
  • Using the “I don’t have $1700 worth of flight controllers” option Ctrl is up and Space is down.
  • That’s the kind of default mapping I would expect… from a serial killer.
  • 14 Time Trial maps.
  • It’s a lot more game than I was expecting.
  • Multiplayer as a technical preview (no competitive game modes as of yet).
  • Leaderboards are working.
  • You can play ship dressup.

Witchcrafter

  • I like me some metroidvania, emphasis on the vania.
  • I look forward to playing it, “when it’s ready”
  • They’re hyping up their magic system. I wonder if it’ll be similar to magicka
  • The fifth element is bruce willis’ hair

Joshua’s Legs

  • Spider qwop spider qwop, control a spider make it drop
  • Seriously, you’re a two-legged spider and each joystick controls a leg
  • Getting over it with bipedal Spider Joshua

Steam: Game Updates

Psychonauts 2 on Linux

  • Unreal Engine.
  • Controller support OOTB.
  • Windowed and fullscreen, but it’s choose your own adventure on windowed.
  • 60+ @ 2160p on YOLO /w render set @ 75%.
  • Around 26GB.
  • It was kind of Steve-O to reprise his role as Raz.

CRSED (RTheren)

  • Cuisine Royale Second Edition: Fulfillment Of All Desires
  • Fuck you for making having to google that
  • It’s not even a very good acronym, what the hell?
  • That said, it does the starting and you can do some of the shooting.
  • I killed a person and then when I tried to use their SMG to kill someone else, I got dead because the recoil disoriented me.
  • For those of you who don’t listen to Darkthone: FOAD == Fuck off and Die.
  • Also shame on you.
  • Get some damn culture.
  • Free to play, but you can buy heroes and pay2win bucks
  • Realistic weaponry AND magic?
  • That Gif at the bottom has a lot of booty.
  • About 11GB if you’re wondering.
  • It exploded across three monitors and I could not get to the menu.

Final Light

  • GG techland giving everyone a free upgrade to the Enhanced edition with the final patch
    • Them’s all the DLCs
  • Beyond that, the patch looks to be mostly balance stuff.
  • Might go back and give this one another playthrough.
  • Co-op was a good time.

News:

Are we anicheat (RTheren)

  • A very nice tattle meter of games whose developers need to get with the program
  • To the shock of absolutely no one, EAC is leading the pack
  • All but 5 VAC games have full support on linux explicitly. The rest seem to work
  • All the Call of Booty’s except the latest black ops too.
  • First thought was, the hell does “planned” mean?
  • Linked to an article saying fk or all about planned HALO support.
  • It’s a list of games that a lot of us have never played because reasons.
  • Let’s you know if the game requires a workaround or custom GE.
  • Some of the Denied ones are from developers equating the drop of a singular file in their depot to supporting Linux.
  • If it were that simple, VirtualProgramming would still be shitting out terrible “Linux ports”.

Moar shinies!

  • Suck it built in gitlab wiki
  • GPU post processing effects
  • VR Morrowind maybe someday?
  • Big moves to help modders bring more stuff to OpenMW seem to mark these upcoming versions as the final ones in terms of development for parity with the Morrowind bits.
  • The launcher now supports adding & removing directories so you can manage your MODs in the GUI.
  • WHAR video!?
  • I looked at the screenshots but that looks like OpenMW to the (my) untrained eye.
    • You could easily tell the difference if they had a side by side
  • I can make out global illumination, some new fog effect, and the shadows seem a little softer
  • I will be playing through it again with everything cranked when this hits release!

GameShell

  • I’ve seen a similar thing called ViKey that is used to teach vi
  • Basically a little laundry list of stuff to do in a shell in the guise of ye olde texte adventure
  • Not a bad way to learn some basic shell commands
  • The dockerfile builds easily enough if you don’t want to translate the debian/ubuntu only deps to your distro of choice
  • I’m still waiting on regex of the Dead.
  • Gives me a little sad knowing that this would be needed for first year uni students.
  • Easy to setup and install on Debian 11.
  • Holding a solid 60fps on the 3060.
  • No controller support.
  • I made it to the top of the tower, I get it.
  • Neat.
  • I look forward to wondering WTF gameshell.sh is doing in my home directory 6mo from now.

Inform 7

  • Inform is a free app for creating works of interactive fiction.
  • As of v10.1.0 it’s open-source.
  • Seems to do natural language and other things outside of my paygrade.
    • Yeah, by about paragraph 3 my eyes glazed over. Then I checked github. It didn’t help
  • Couple of games on Itch use it.
  • Hey, more open source game tech is cool

Game: Gravity Ace

Devel: John Watson
Engine: Godot
Price: £11.39 / $14.99 / $17.49

Wazzat: Gravity Ace is a 2D multi-directional gravity shooter (cave-flyer). It’s a love letter to Thrust and Gravitar and all of the amazing games they inspired.

Mandatory Disclosure: Dev sent us keys

Venn:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Using a controller pressing up/down does two moves in the menu / options.
  • Option for speedrunning.
  • Fullscreen & choose your own adventure.
  • You’re hitting 0db in the level completion / stats screen. Dial that back.
  • There is a classic control mode.
  • You can access the alternate control scheme from the Options menu.
  • Nice chiptune soundtrack.
  • Level editor.

Fun?

  • Quite a bit going on here.
  • Fly the ship, grapple the things, keep an eye on the shield & fuel while engaging in bullet hell & shooting baddies while rescuing people and collecting space-coins.
  • That’s… a bit much, eh?
  • Like, I think you could pick any 3 from that list and have an enjoyable game.
  • Pick any 4 and you are in challenge mode.
  • Doing all 8 resulted in my old-arse getting killed to death a lot.
  • Yeah I know, git gud scrub.
  • I did, kinda.
  • I made myself finish the first section but then I ran out of cares.
  • Honestly, I think the shield was the tipping point.
  • I could manage the juggling act if that was not a factor.
  • But it is and I got tired of exploding, so I tapped out.
  • Did I mention the speedrun mode?
  • Really!?
  • If you’re a fan of unintentional frustration / rage games give Gravity Ace a look.
  • It’s regularly priced at 1 Hollow Knight.

Jordan:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Launches OOTB
  • Holds 60 at “fullscreen”
  • Otherwise you can click and drag your resolution
  • DS4 works out of the box with xbox prompts
  • The controller is suuuuuuper sensitive in the menus
  • I didn’t find the controls quite as offensive as pedro did. They’re pretty standard for your retroboosterlikes
  • It’s hipster pixelly, but all the sprite art is clear and there’s no character blindnes
  • There is a soundtrack. It’s okay

Fun?

  • Cave shooters, like racing or minigolf, are one of those genres of games that, intellectually, I understand why people like them
  • It just doesn’t work with me
  • Gravity ace doesn’t seem like too bad a cave shooter though
  • You got your standard rescue the peoples, but you also gotta grab balls. Big balls
  • Sometimes you gotta let your balls float because you can only grab one thing at a time but goddamn, you need to grab those balls if you want to play more of the game
  • The rest comes down to navigating increasingly claustrophobic corridors while minding your fuel nanny bar
  • And shit, it comes with a level editor if you’re feeling creative. Although I don’t see a built in way to share your levels. I guess you just gotta make the files available somehow

Pedro:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Launches out of the box both here and on the Deck
  • It VSyncs properly if you enable that in the options.
  • Didn’t like the DualShock 4 or DualSense, with or without Steam Input.
  • Worked fine with the Deck and the BiMonk Pro 4.
  • But we’ll get back to controls in a moment.
  • The hipster pixely graphics are pretty good and I liked the sound design.
  • I even tapped that music icon on the menu to see how much the Soundtrack was.
  • If it had been £5 instead of £8 I would have bought it right there.

Fun?

  • Now let’s talk about the controls, but first, some setup.
  • I said last week that music can make or break a game more than graphics and I feel that still applies.
  • But there is one thing far more important than music, and that is the controls.
  • The controls are how us fleshy meatbags interact with a virtual world.
  • The controls are how developers dictate how much agency we as real people have in the surreal world they created.
  • And the two control schemes that Gravity Ace limits to us are shit.
  • With one your left analog stick, WASD or Directional arrows, dictate the absolute direction in which you move. You can use the right analog stick or mouse to aim.
  • With the other you only get directional movement and no aiming.
  • The latter one is aptly dubbed classic, and let’s say there are very good reasons as to why we’ve moved away from that.
  • The problem is, when changing between the two the fire buttons on the keyboard are Shift and Enter.
  • Shift and Enter!
  • As if that wasn’t bad enough, you have to pick one or the other.
  • There is no mixing and matching of controls, there is no changing individual keys.
  • It’s one or the other and if you’d like to have mouse aiming with the classic movement of the ship, tough!
  • So I ended up not liking Gravity Ace at all.
  • Playing it felt bad, it felt like I was fighting decades of muscle memory and intuition as to how a video game should control.
